It’s hard to believe that this is our fifth day here, it feels like only yesterday that we were in Dublin airport. Today was the first day that it didn’t snow as we walked to the train station. We were anxious to see what this day brought. We had 15 minutes to spare before our first class so we decided to get a cup of tea and coffee, it was nothing like the tea at home.
We started our day off with the first years and they were practising how to do gel nails for the first time, and we all got to have a go at it too. Needless to say it was harder than it looked. There was quite a lot of dust after we filed the nails down so at the end everyone pulled their own weight and tied up. After lunch we were put into a class with the second years and they were preparing and practising for their open salon that was starting next week. We got a chance to see them waxing and even take part ourselves. They use different products to us so it was interesting to see a full facial using Environ, the mask was especially interesting as it is a peel off mask that covers the eyes and mouth. After a long day of treatments we decided that we would go to the cinema to watch a movie, it was nice to sit and relax. We enjoyed some of Glasgow’s night life at Life bar and restaurant, and listened to the live band that were there. Then headed home for yet another early start the next morning. -Hayley

We made our way to the queen st station, to get on the train to bring us to college. When we eventually made it to the college, after taking a wrong turn or two once off the train, we went up to the office of Donna, the head of hairdressing. We were shown into one of the first year classes, they were doing roller sets and upstyles. We got a 15 minute break where they showed us to the canteen. Laura and Cloe were then asked to be models for two of the thrid year girls.
While this was going on saoirse and Tara, stayed with the first years, they met some of the teachers, and went to a career guidance class. Lunch was next, the college has a fantastic supply of food for the students and well as a few smaller coffee shops on site. Once lunch had finished, we attended our first make up class. Again all four of us were models, as the girls had an assessment. We got our locker keys and made our way back to the train stop and went back to the apartment. We made pancake batter at it was Pancake Tuesday. At 6 us and the media boys meet up with Donall and all went for pancakes in a local chocolate cafe. After a stop of in the bar, we went back home to more pancakes -Chloe On Tuesday it was our first day of classes in New College Lanarkshire. Today we took the train to college which was an experienced in itself. While we thought we left with enough time to get to the station, I don’t think any of us where expecting the size of the crowd's in the train station or how slippy the footpaths where going to be after the rain that fell last night and earlier today. We eventually made it to college just in time to find out where our classes where.
For the first class we had aromatherapy massage class. The three girls got to enjoy a massage while I watched as the other students had clients in for there case studies. It was great to see the different movements that they use while preforming a massage. We then had a nail extension class in the evening. It was great to see the technique and see how to do nail extensions and it will be a course that i would like to do when I get home. After we enjoyed the pancakes we headed back to the apartments to enjoy a relaxing night in watching a couple of movies. -Sarah (Saturday) The four of us; Tara, Cloe, Laura and Saoirse, are the four hairdressing students that were chosen to go to Glasgow on Erasmus+. We landed in Glasgow & got a taxi from the airport to the Glasgow loft apartments. The apartments are of a much better luxury than we’re used to as college students. Once we got to the apartments we found our rooms, unpacked, got settled and then went out for a late dinner.
On Sunday we all gathered in one of the apartments and made a breakfast, including toast, scrambled egg, tea, coffee, the works. After we had eaten we had a meeting at 12 where we were given maps of the city & the accompanying teacher ( Donall ) showed us around the main parts of Glasgow. We decided to go supermarket shopping for food as we didn’t plan on eating out all the time. This took a bit of exploring & asking for directions, but soon we found a lidl. It was to our amazement and disappointment that dairy gold butter was nowhere to be found! After calling a taxi to avoid carrying over a weeks worth of food for 4 people, we arrived back to the lofts, unpacked the food and set off to watch the Ireland game and experience the match day atmosphere in the Scottish capital. The Irish bar we went to was called 'Waxy’s' where we watched the Scotland vs France match. Due to the great score in the match, the atmosphere was buzzing. Afterwards, we made our way back to the apartments through a snow flurry and had a quiet night in with a movie as we had our first day in our colleg the next morning. Monday- The bus was called to meet us outside the apartments at 8:20am, but due to weather complications ( snow overnight ) it didn’t arrive until nearly a quarter to 9am. After the half an hour journey it took to get to the college, we were greeted with orange juice and cereal bars by the college coordinator. We were given a welcome pack and then we were introduced to the head of the hair and beauty department who then gave us a tour of the hair and beauty class rooms and salons. We were in amazement and awe at the standards of the college and its facilities and how much it caters to the students and staff needs , ie , daycare for students if they had children. We then walked to the local high school as there was a hair and beauty competition on. We stayed there for the afternoon watching the many categories of the competition ,ie , colour & cuts , bridal styles , bridal makeup , fantasy hair etc. At 3 we walked back to the main campus and got the bus back home. We then cooked a dinner in our apartment ( chicken curry ) and then relaxed for the night as we were tired from the busy day. -Laura Our first day of college in Glasgow was on a Monday morning when we all woke up to a snowy Glasgow city. We were as prepared as much as we could be to go to New college Lanarkshire, a mini bus from the college came to collect us to bring us there. We were all nervous however very excited to get to meet new people. Jaqueline is a staff member over the beauty department and Donna is a staff member over the hair department. Donna wasn't available today as there was a hair and makeup artistry competition in the college. Jaqueline gave us a tour of the beautiful campus where we saw the beauty department which was extremely large the facilities within the department were amazing, once we were finished the tour, we took a 15 minute coffee break. When met with Jaqueline again she brought us to the hair and makeup artistry competition which was in another building. There were many categories with unique styles from the 90s, modern styles, Bridal and fantasy, I found this to be very enjoyable as it was interesting to see all the hair and beauty students prepare their models for the competition within certain amount of time and then seeing the finished look of each model in a catwalk. Overall today was great we got to meet the lecturers of the beauty and hair department and also got to see the beauty and hair artistry competition in progress. -Katie On Saturday we set off on our travels from Galway at half 12am and headed for Dublin airport. It still hadn’t set in that we were going until we checked in, and then the pre flight excitement was something else. We passed the time in the airport by having a bite to eat and shopping, but the time flew and before we knew it we were running for the gate.
When we got on the plane we were waiting to take off for a while, and then we started to get nervous, but the air hostess was funny and made the flight very enjoyable. In total the flight only took 30 minutes so we didn’t see the time passing! When we got off the plane it was a quick dash to the bus to bring us from the plane to the airport to get our bags, and thankfully all of our bags were there. We then got a taxi to our apartments. When we got our keys there was no hesitation and we went straight up to see what it was like, and we couldn’t believe our eyes. It was amazing, everything we needed was provided for us..washing machine, dish washer, close house, iron and ironing board, towels. The Glasgow Loft Apartments really thought of everything. It was quite a long day so we were happy to see our beds. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next 2 weeks brings us... -Hayley On Sunday we woke up after a great sleep in our lovely apartments, looking forward to exploring for the day. We began by gathering together for a briefing with Donall to go through some things we would need to know in regards to our placements. We then set off exploring the streets of Glasgow.
As we were walking I was noticing all the shops that I would definitely be returning to in my free time. We were lucky with the day that was in it, the weather was crisp and cold with the sun shining. One thing I wasn't expecting to need during the stay were sunglasses but I made use of them today. After a long walk we made a pit stop for a hot drink and enjoyed it outside in the fresh air. We headed off on our separate ways afterwards. Once we had finished the tour and briefing from Donall we then went for a look around the shops, being sure to take is easy as we still had two weeks left of our stay. There is plenty of entertainment on the streets of Glasgow from singing and guitar playing to the bagpipes. We wandered around the streets some more, taking in our surroundings. We decided we would finish off our day with a nice meal in TGI Fridays which was a great idea. It had a cosy atmosphere with friendly servers and great food. We headed for home afterwards to prepare ourselves for our first day of college ensuring that we would have everything that we need. -Emma |
