Today was our very last day in Glasgow city, it has been such a great experience to be on placement at New College Lanarkshire for two weeks. We saw many things and learned so much. However we are glad to be going home and facing back to the reality of preparing for our exams at GTI with our new experience.
All four of us went for our last breakfast together before we set out on our travels. We all met in the lobby of the DoubleTree Hilton at 12 noon where we met with Linda from GTI. We then got a taxi to the airport. Once we got through check in and security we went for a bite to eat before browsing through the duty free. At 3pm we were finally on the plane which was only a 35 minute flight. We were all so excited and so tired from our journey and looking forward to be going home to our families and telling them about our experience. - Katie

We once again took the train from Coat dyke to college. We meet Donna at her office and she said she was going to treat us to a massage with the beauty students as we were coming to the end of our placement in Glasgow. We then went to Neil’s workshop where they were working on styling and dressing the hair. We got involved and Neil gave us a list of products and equipment to use on the hair and we got to work on our own dressing and styling the looks. Due to the weather we were let home early as it was a red warning and they were making sure we got home safe. We also met up with Christina from GTI in the hotel for a catch up and to go through what we were doing on our placement. In the evening we went to the cinema, before going home where we cooked dinner. We made it back just as the snow begin to start falling again.
-Tara After our eventful weekend we went to college in the morning at 9am as per usual. We were put into a new group today where we would be working with a teacher called Alison. Alison specialises in wigs and demonstrated some techniques to us. She has worked in film, theatre, opera and competitions for over 18 years. We got to see her class working on wigs, creating curls and up-styles on them. Later on we were put in with David and Roisin's class who were working on a total look which consisted of hair, outfit and makeup. We each got to watch them do the makeup and clients and they also completed makeup on us.
After that, in the afternoon we got to go back to the wigs and created our own template using cling film and sellotape. This was really fun to do and if we were ever asked to make a wig template to match someone's head shape we could now know how to do it. On the cold walk home we stopped to admire some squirrels we saw running around the park but as soon as we went to take a photo they ran off. When we got back to Renfrew street we met up with Sarah from GTI and the other Media students where we caught up in the Hilton hotel across from the lofts. It was nice to catch up and we got some photos taken with her. After that we went up to our apartment and cooked our dinner and relaxed for the evening. -Saoirse We were woken this morning by Tara at 9am telling us that we were going to Edinburgh for the day. The train only took 45/50 minutes to get us into Edinburgh. We explored the city for a bit, trying to find a place to eat. We eventually found a small cafe to have a brunch in. We were going to go to the zoo but were told it closes at 4pm during the start of the year and by the time we finished eating it was after 3pm so there was no time unfortunately. We then walked up Calton Hill which had a lot of beautiful monuments as well as being able to overlook the whole of Edinburgh from the top.
After this we walked to Edinburg Castle and got to experience it as the sun was setting. As we were in the middle of the city we couldn’t help but have a look in the tourists shops and purchase a few souvenirs for people back home. As it started getting colder and we got more tired from all the walking, we decided to get the train back to Glasgow. Overall we had a great day. - Laura On Friday, it is the second years open salon in the college, which we helped out with last week also. Neil, one of the tutors in the college asked us to do blow-drys on three young girls. We made them feel very welcome and at ease in the salon. After lunch the salon quietened down so we were allowed to do each other's hair. We then stopped in the shops on our way home from the train. The four of us and the GTI Media group all went for a lovely dinner. After a little while of deciding, we settled on choosing a nice Italian. After that we walked around Glasgow, seeing all the lights and atmosphere before going back up to the apartments where we chilled out and reflected on the two weeks we had just done.
On Saturday, we did not get up too early as it was the first lie in we had all week. We headed off into the city centre, where we once again we had a look at the shops. We then went to watch the Ireland match. There was a welcoming, home like atmosphere. It's was great fun as everyone was delighted with the match and the result! We also watched the Scottish beat the English, much to everyone's surprise. After this we went to a show where Chloe's friend- Mia, was performing. The show was being held in a small theatre just on the edge of Glasgow. It was amazing and very interesting to watch different youth companies dancing. There was even a group from Dublin. After that we went back to the apartment and got ready to go out for the night to explore some more. -Chloe This morning we were offered to get another facial massage which we obviously didn’t turn down. It was with the first years who needed to practice and do assessments, it was interesting to observe their approach. They were really good at the massage techniques and we left out feeling so relaxed and ready for the rest of the day. After the facials we then attended a colour theory workshop where we learned about 'Wella' colour. It was brilliant to be able to learn more about a colour brand most of us use back in our salons in Galway. It is something that we can put into practice when we return home.
After lunch we went back into the same class and learned about applying clip-in extensions to help enhance a hairstyle. We also practiced our blow-dry techniques before we finished. On the way to the train station we walked through the dog park, it was the highlight of our day as we got to pet a load of dogs. We’re getting to know the owners at this stage, as we see them on our walk to college and on the way home also. Walking through the main street we went into a few shops to get some bits for our dinner and lunches. Once we got home we made our dinner, and then went to the gym. Overall it was a good day. -Laura We spent the whole day with the make up artists. Their workshop today was focussed on body painting. First of all the lecturer, Sharon, showed us how to the body paints worked on the skin and how to blend them together, she gave us a colour wheel so we could see what colours match and work well together.
After this she let us work on our own, to paint whatever we wanted on each other’s arms. After the small break she gave the four of us a demonstration on a cut crease eye make up look. Then we had to recreate it on each other. She gave us helpful tips and tricks throughout the workshop on how to apply products properly and how to stop a clients eye from watering. I’m looking forward to using these tips and tricks when I get home to GTI. After college we headed to pick up the last few bits of shopping before we came home. -Hayley Today was our final day in college at Coatbridge. For our last day we spent it in the 'Autograph' salon like we did last Friday. When we arrived to the workshop we went through the schedule to see what treatments were assigned to us. We set up out areas before the treatments started at 9.30am. Between the four of us, the treatments we carried out ranged from full body massage, back neck and shoulder massage, luxury manicure, luxury pedicure and shellac polish.
We brought our clients up from reception and we went through their consultation forms and record cards before beginning our treatments. We didn't feel the time go at all. Before we knew it our day was over and it was time to say goodbye. We visited Jackie who was the head of the beauty department to say our thank you before leaving. She gave us all a goodbye hug and a parting gift which was a generous surprise. The experience will definitely come in handy for us with practical exams looming back in GTI. It was a lovely gesture and a great way to end our time at the Coatbridge Campus. -Emma We once again got the train to the college this morning. We were all looking forward to the day ahead as we knew that we would be doing tasks that we have not done before. The first workshop we had was a hairdressing tutorial, it was a really good experience to see how they carry out some of their treatments.
We were all clients for the hairdressers and they showed us how to put different types of rollers in and how to take them out properly. We then had a facial workshop where we all received an environ facial which involved an algae mask, it was a nice treatment as we have never done this type of mask in GTI. When we got home we decided to go out to the cinema for a relaxing evening. Overall it was a very eventful day. - Sarah We woke up to a crisp clear morning with no clouds in sight which we haven't seen yet since we arrived. Today we were put into a first year hairdressing workshop where we were shown how to do perming for the first time. As we already had the knowledge on how to do a perm wind, Jane- the tutor, asked us to help the other girls that were just starting off. She then tested us by asking us questions on the practical and theory of perming. Thankfully we knew more then we thought and answered everything, impressing ourselves and the class.
We learned that their perming techniques are exactly the same as ours and they teach it the same way too as GTI. At the end of this class Jane spoke to us all and explained to the group about the funding in Ireland compared to Scotland. The college here in Scotland is paid for students are not required to pay for any equipment or fees and get paid £80 a week to go to college. They are now more appreciative and realise how lucky they are with the amount of funding they receive. This gained respect for us and showed that we are dedicated to pursuing hairdressing as a career. We then moved on where we watched another group of girls who were preparing for the fashion show that was to come later on during the day. The third year girls have such amazing talent. They were all doing crazy colours and cuts, creating a mood and theme with the hair. We were then lucky enough to get involved and help the girls mix colour, blow-dry, set up the trolleys and talk to them about hairdressing. It was such a fun experience to see all age groups doing such creative work in such a friendly, bubbly working environment. We were then put into a makeup workshop where we got to see evening and bridal looks being created by the hairdressers. At the end of the class everyone was handed a piece of paper to write down their feedback for the day, including us. After our long day we stayed to get a better view of what their college was all about. The red carpet was laid out, with chairs either side and snack food and drinks provided. The music started playing and everyone had such great energy. The models walked out presenting their fantastic work from the hair colour to cut, to the makeup and the style. Everyone encouraged each other while the photographer was getting all the pictures from the evening. When the fashion show was over we then mingled with teachers and students from the college which we all enjoyed. This is something none of us experienced before and we would love to bring some of these ideas back to GTI. - Saoirse |
