Today was a busy day as we were scheduled to attend a make up artistry workshop in the morning and a special effects workshop in the afternoon. We were models for the make up artists at first, where they did a colourful eye make up look and then we swapped over to do a make up look on the them. I found this to be very fun as we could be as creative as we wanted and use any colours and style we wanted. This gave us the opportunity to show everyone our individual make up skills. The make up tutor showed us some tips on how to do wing liner perfectly and also how to do a cut crease. I found this class to be very helpful for our make up exam back in GTI as we learned some tips for applying eyeshadow and wing liner.
After lunch we then had make up special effects workshops which was very interesting as we wouldn't normally have the opportunity to experience doing special effects at GTI. We were all given clay by the tutor who showed us how to mould the clay using different techniques. He had also shown us some of the current students work that they were working on, they were using the mould of a face shape, giving the effect of scars and burns on the face with the use of clay. We were then moulding our own scars and tattoo shapes on the clay using a wooden spatula and our hands. This gave us a chance to experiment and get creative with the clay. We all found this very exciting. Overall, today was a great day and we learned many things that we can improve on and practice once we return home. - Katie

We started of by doing the same duties by getting the train to Coat dyke and made our way to the college. We then went to Donna's office to find out what we are doing for the day. We went to Neil who was going to get us to partake in a cutting workshop. This was a really good workshop as we got to practise our cutting techniques. Neil then showed us how they learn to cut hair and their techniques they use. We learnt new skills in this class and found them very useful to us when cutting hair.
Near the end of the day Neil came over to us and said they have offered us a beauty treatment in the beauty room. We then headed up to the beauty room and the four of us got treated to a facial which was such a lovely treat. We found this very relaxing and professional and was so much fun after a busy week of work. After that we headed home to our apartment and then decide to go to the gym which we have access to. Overall it was a great day. -Tara Our walk to the train this morning was more enjoyable than other mornings as it wasn't painfully cold outside. We were looking forward to our work this week as we had a different timetable to refer too. Our morning started out with Trisha being giving us our tasks for the day. Her group focused on contemporary aesthetics. This was focused on tinting the eyelashes and eyebrows and shaping the brows. We watched as Trisha carried out a brow tint and shape on a student.
We were familiar with this process as we completed it last year so it was interesting to compare and contrast approaches. For our second workshop of the day we were back with the nail technicians where we had the chance to practice nail art. This is something I hadn't tried before and I found it enjoyable. The time flew by for this workshop. In the afternoon we covered massage techniques. We were paired up with students in the group for them to practice their massage techniques on us. We then swapped over and we demonstrated our massage sequence techniques that we had learned in GTI, on them. We headed out for dinner in the evening and finished off our day by exploring a bit more of Glasgow. -Emma Once again we got the train to college, as Donna had made a plan for us on Friday we knew where to go. We went up to the makeup room with David, he was doing a total look with his 2nd year class. This was very interesting as we had never done anything like this before. He showed us a video documentary on a young English fashion designer, Charles Jeffery (Loverboy). It was 25 minutes based on his trip to New York and where he got some of his inspiration.
After that we watched his 2018 autumn winter collection. Once we had seen most of his looks, we were split into teams of three and had to create a look, getting inspiration from his designs. This had to include a costume, hair and makeup. All of us were put into different groups so we really had to step outside of our comfort zone. Once we all were finished, all the models had to walk down a runway in the room. After this it was lunch, we then went to Donna's office to know where to go next. She told us we could go down to the open salon and get our hair washed and blow dried. Overall it was an eventful day. - Chloe Today we had a well deserved lie in, we started our day off with some breakfast. Afterwards we strolled around the shopping centre, going in and out of the shops. The weather was miserable so it was a good excuse to stay inside and shop. As this was our first and last full weekend in Glasgow we wanted to get as much done as we could, so we spilt up and went our separate ways so we could all go to the shops that we wanted. At around 5pm we headed back to the apartments and just relaxed before meeting Linda at 7pm. After leaving Linda we quickly ran to Tesco to get bread and the essentials for our lunch and breakfast in the morning.
- Hayley On Friday we got the train as usual to the college. We went up to Donna's office to know where to go for the day. We were put into the open salon with the second years. It was very similar to ours back home, in GTI. The clients checked in at reception and were brought to the salon, they were seated and the girls went through a consultation with them. We were a small be anxious as we didn't know the in and outs of their salon and it took us a little while to feel comfortable. We each got a client to blow dry and this settled us. Once the open salon had ended we went back up to Donna.
She sat us down and went through the timetable of all the hairdressing roles and let us pick what ones we would like to participate in the following week, and what ones would benefit us the most. We then got the train back to the apartments. We went to the gym again, came home cooked dinner. Later in the evening we then went to the cinema which is very close to the apartment, only a five minute walk. We were all surprised by the size of the cinema, our screen was in the fifth floor, we also got to pick our seats which we were not used to. On Saturday, we gave ourselves a lie in, as we had to get up at 7:30pm for the train. We all went to one apartment and made breakfast. We all got ready and went out to explore Glasgow to see some of the sites and shops. We went to the gallery of modern art (GoMA) which we enjoyed greatly, we then went and had a look in the shops, we all were very sensible and didn't buy anything, but decided to wait until next week, just incase we needed the money later on. We went back to the apartments, got food and ready as we were going out Saturday night. On Sunday we once again gave ourselves the morning to lie in and chill, we all went to one apartment and had breakfast and made ourselves comfy in the couch and watched TV. We went to the local Tesco and got food for dinner. Once we had eaten we watched the baftas and had an early night in preparation for college in the morning. -Chloe Its hard to believe that it had already been a week since we first arrived in Glasgow. We decided that we would go to Edinburgh for the day and see what it was like, and to do a few activities while we where there also.
We got the train from Glasgow Queens street this morning to Edinburgh. After we got off the train which only took an hour, we decided to go for some breakfast and make a plan on what we wanted to do for the day to make the most of the time we had. We decided that our main aim for the day was to go to the Edinburgh Dungeons and to the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. We first went to the Edinburgh Dungeons as they were the closest to where we were at that moment. Once we lined up and got our tickets we had to wait for half an hour for a free space on the tour. While we were waiting we decided to pass the time in a few small shops. Once we had finished the Edinburgh Dungeons which is somewhere I would gladly go again, we went to world of Illusions. We did enjoy it but we thought that it would be better which was a small bit of a let down. After we finished everything we wanted to do, we decided to head out for some dinner and head back to Glasgow afterwards. We finished off the day with going out exploring in Glasgow a little more. -Sarah It was Friday, our first salon day. We were very excited to see how the Friday salon works in Glasgow. We walked to the train station which was only a ten minute walk and we reached the Scotrail train station at queen street. We were a few minutes early for our train which was great as normally we rush to get there on time. I feel we are now becoming more aware of our time keeping and know the exact time to leave the apartments to catch our train.
Once we arrived at the college we immediately started setting up our treatment beds and work area for the autograph salon which is held by the beauty students every Friday. We were all informed what treatments we had for the day at the start of the day. I had a full body massage followed by a lip and chin wax, Emma had a Dermalogica facial and a back massage, Hayley had a Dermalogica facial and Sarah had a full body massage. Today was a great day as we got to experience a busy salon day here in Scotland in comparison to back home in GTI. The salon here is slightly different to the one at home as they have a huge reception downstairs for the hair and beauty clients where we collect the clients for their treatments. This is also used for checking in clients. There is a computer system where clients are checked in and out and also for where they pay for their treatments. I found it interesting to learn the different way the Scottish beauty girls set up their treatment bed and units. They use only towels, a duvet cover and a pillow which we wouldn't normally use in our salons back in GTI. I feel this provides extra comfort for the clients. After finishing a long day in the salon all four of us were wrecked after the busy day. We got the train back to Queen street in Glasgow and went for something nice to eat as we were all so hungry. Overall I really enjoyed the salon today and loved communicating with a new clientele. -Katie Each day we take the same journey to our placement... heading to the train and then heading to Donna's office. When we met at Donna's office, Donna asked us what would we like to do so she gave us options for hairdressing in the open salon with one of their college classes, or go into the fantasy make up artistry class. We picked to go into the fantasy make up artistry class as we never seen it done and thought it would benefit us when we are doing or fantasy hair up-dos.
We spent the day with Jenny who is the make up artist teacher. When we went into the room all the girls were very welcoming and we got to watch a live fantasy look that she was creating on one of her students. When she was done with that look, she then paired one of her student off with one of us and they got to do a fantasy look on us. We found this very good and interesting as it was our first time seeing how they do it and what they use. When the look was finished we then were taken into a room for a photo shoot. Afterwards, we went for a hour lunch break in the canteen. After lunch was over, we then went back into the room and this time we got to create a look on one of the students, this was very fun as we got to play around with all the different equipment to create the look. After the look was created we then got to take our models and do a photo shoot with them. Before we knew it, it was 4pm and we were finished and headed back to the train. We got the train back to Glasgow and headed back to the loft apartments. When we got back we decided to use the gym facilities which were excellent and well organised. We then headed back to the hotel and made dinner and then headed for bed. A long but eventful day. -Tara We had a cold but dry morning for our journey to college on Thursday. We can't believe it's coming to the end of our first week here at the Coatbridge Campus. We started off our morning in the Signature Salon where we were paired off with Pupils for their body and facial electro therapy class.
Firstly I carried out facial treatment and body treatment consultations on Nicola. Their consultation forms were quite similar to ours back in GTI. She then carried out the same process on me as she was going to give me a facial treatment using the skincare brand Environ. This is a brand that I have heard a lot about but don't have any product knowledge on. Their massage sequence incorporated some of the same moves as we use also. In the afternoon we were in with the level 6 beauty students where they were doing acrylic nails. We were paired off to work with other students to size up the correct tip and then apply the tip. Unfortunately the walk home was a miserable one as the rain poured from the heavens. We decided to take it easy this evening as no one felt like venturing outside again. We enjoyed a night in front of the television in our cosy apartments. -Emma |
